Saint George slaying the dragon attributed to Jacques de Baerze. Sculpture in the round, in silvered, gilded and polychromed wood. The Saint is in characteristic 14th century knight's armour, with his corbin's beak helm, chain mail and steel greaves.
Standing, he holds the sword in his right hand and the shield (missing), and he slays the dark red-colored dragon. He is represented on foot in the same style and in the same dimensions than the Saint George of the triptych of saints and martyrs of Dijon Fine Arts Museum or that of the Mimara Museum. There legend of Saint George: legendary character, George became the patron saint of knights. His cult developed particularly in Europe back from the Crusades. This theme of Eastern origin was taken up by the Christians to symbolize deliverance from the oppressed church by the paganism. This fight being an important moment in the legend of Saint Georges, he is frequently represented in painting as in sculpture.
